Unlike other Charleston historic homes that have been restored to their former glamour, the Aiken-Rhett House has not changed since 1860. This detached brick house built in Regency style in 1817 was purchased by the Aiken family who remodelled and expanded it during their residence. The ravages of time are evident here, especially in the occasional pieces of original furniture, but that is part of the property's charm. To the rear, the original outbuildings (1817) once housed the slaves' quarters.
