The coast, where subtropical fruit crops and plants grow, is dotted with watchtowers built after the Reconquista (1492) to prevent raids by Berber pirates, who were a threat on the coasts until the 18C. Don't hesitate to venture away from the beaches: you will be rewarded by a landscape full of charm, vineyards carpeting its steep slopes, superb Moorish villages with whitewashed houses that glint almost blindingly in the sunlight.
