Perhaps the loveliest phenomenon in a region endowed with an abundance of natural phenomena is 129ft Burney Falls, once dubbed by Theodore Roosevelt as the eighth wonder of the world. Though not exceptionally tall, the falls owe their uniqueness to the presence of an underground stream flowing just beneath the surface of spring-fed Burney Creek, which cascades over a basalt cliff in a thundering shower. Water from the underground stream emerges from the fern-covered face of the cliff in myriad wispy falls, creating intriguing aquatic effects. The mist-filled air above the falls provides a blank canvas for the light filtering through the foliage above, presenting an ever-changing play of shadows and frequent rainbows.A nature trail (1mi loop) leads in a circuit along the gorge beneath the falls and across Burney Creek; panels and an interpretive brochure explain the geological features and flora visible in the immediate area.
