In 1830, this theatre witnessed the beginning of the "September Days", when the audience at a performance of La Muette de Portici by Auber started a rebellion. Rebuilt in 1855 by Poelaert, the building was renovated in 1985-86 and completely modernised in 2017. The interior is richly decorated by well-known contemporary artists such as Buren. The building is now home to the National Opera.
