In 1861, the mouth of the River Penfeld was no longer large enough for naval and commercial shipping so this new port was created which now handles 3 million tonnes of commercial goods every year. As a ship repair centre, it boasts the world's largest dry dock capable of handling oil rigs. All these activities can be seen at closer quarters if you walk along the La Pérouse breakwater. Along the Quai de la Douane, Le Fourneau, the national centre for street art, opens to the public on a regular basis.
