Mount Vernon Street boasts one of the most elegant residences of Beacon Hill. After visiting the Nichols House Museum (N° 55), the only house (1804) of the district open to the public, stop at N° 85: one of the rare houses set in a private garden. Notice its façade adorned by slender pilasters crowned by a wooden balustrade and an octagonal tower. This beautiful edifice (1802), like those at N° 87 and 89, were all designed by Bulfinch.
