Like many religious buildings of the period, this little 17C monastery bears the mark of the cultural reawakening unleashed under Constantin Brâncoveanu (notably the addition of a narthex) a century later. Its founder, the Wallachian prince Matei Basarab (1632-1654), who fought valiantly against the Turks, was finally laid to rest here. Note the fine bas-reliefs on his tomb, bearing the arms of Wallachia.
