Nicknamed the "Kommode" (chest of drawers) because of its curved façade, the Baroque-style Alte Bibliothek (old library) was built in 1780. It is without a doubt the most interesting building on this square . Occupying the location once planned for the Science Academy designed by Georg Christian Unger, the building stands alongside the Old Palace (Altes Palais) and is now home to the Humboldt University.
