This work by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), who created the famous Statue of Liberty, represents the town of Belfort with its three great defenders - Legrand, who defended it in 1814, Lecourbe, in 1815 and Denfert-Rochereau, in 1870. It stands in the centre of a square, which is surrounded by early-20C buildings: the prefecture, courthouse and festival hall.
