This museum boasts one of the richest collections in the world dedicated to the Byzantine Empire and the history of Christianity in the East. Opened in 1924, it is home to a superb collection of exhibits dating from the 1C to the current day, arranged chronologically in three large sections. Exhibits include sarcophagi, statuettes, clothing, coins, medieval religious art, frescoes, and Coptic, Cretan and Ionian art, as well as a splendid collection of icons dating from the 14C.
