Dating from the late 1C, the Arles Amphitheatre (Arènes d'Arles) was turned into a fortress, and later into a veritable "town within a town". With a capacity of 21 000 spectators, the amphitheatre measures 136m by 107m. The stage (69m by 40m) was separated from the seats by a wall and covered with a floor, below which the stage machinery and animal cages were kept. Today the amphitheatre is used for corridas and Camargue-style bull-runs, as well as variety shows.
