Of the numerous fortresses that dot this landscape, Alnwick Castle is surely the grandest. Built in 1096 by Yves de Vescy, Baron of Alnwick, it was initially restored by the first Lord Percy around 1300. The 18C-modelled State rooms are the backdrop for an exceptional furniture, objects and picture collection (Titian, Van Dyck...). The Gothic chapel with its Aubusson tapestries and the splendid library are the jewels of the castle, which also boasts fine gardens.
