Formerly piazza di l'Olmu, this is a large rectangle which faces the port and which is shaded by palm. Bordered on its South side by little restaurants with benches outside, this is the focal point of Ajaccio life. Noteworthy is the statue de la Madonnucia, which has protected the town since 1656 and is celebrated in a ceremony on 18th March. A white marble statue by Maglioli of First Consul Bonaparte surmounts the Fountain of the four-lions.
