Aegina, an island in the Saronic Gulf, is famous for a number of reasons! First, in 1828 it was the first capital of liberated Greece; it is home to the Temple of Aphaea, one of the finest and best-preserved temples in Greece; finally, it produces the best pistachios in the country, with a Protected Designation of Origin. But most of all, 35min from Piraeus, it constitutes Athens's green suburb, where people come to cool down. As you see, Aegina is worth the trip, but you won't have the place to yourself.
