Known since Alexander the Great (4C BC), the city of Sagalassos was prosperous during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Much remains to be learnt about this site, which has only recently been excavated and which could prove to be as splendid as Ephesus. The Roman Baths have been rebuilt, the library mosaics cleaned, and the theatre continues to impress. Visiting this ghost town, which is surrounded by the wild, unspoiled landscapes so typical of Anatolia, is a truly moving experience.
