In the Sougia valley, Agia Irini Gorge is the most hidden away of the White Mountain gorges. Closed off by verdant slopes planted with fir, cypress, oak and chestnut trees, the gorge is 600m high above the riverbed. At the summit, a few pines cling to the rock faces. Throughout the itinerary - 7.5km walk and 500m incline - the intoxicating scents of sage, thyme and rosemary assail the senses.
