The Augustinian San Nicolás de Tolentino Monastery, founded by Fray Andrés de Mata c 1550 in Otomi territory, possesses among the loveliest 16C painted decoration in Mexico. It counts among its numerous treasures polychrome frescoes, in its vast open chapel, the vault of the coro alto (tribune) and sacristy (baptistery) in the church, the coffered vaulted ceiling of the refectory, the fresco in the De Profundis hall, the entirely painted staircase...
