Elegantly built on a rocky spur, the Château d'Amboise controlled one of the seven bridges that spanned the River Loire between Gien and Angers. A royal castle from 1471, it successfully combines the military might of the Middle Ages with Renaissance features, of which Amboise was the cradle. Its vast esplanade commands a sweeping view over the Loire river, the valley and the city. Tour the chapel, king's apartments, gardens and underground network.
