Covered by lush vegetation, the Troodos Mountains stand at the heart of the island. Cypriots come here in search of cooler climes in summer; some come for the skiing in winter, on the slopes of Mt Olympus, the highest point in Cyprus (1 952m altitude). It's also great hiking terrain: three waymarked trails, suitable for all levels, start at Troodos crossroads. In the verdant valleys, dozens of chapels are tucked away, some with wonderful paintings.
