To the north of Ventimiglia, Val Nervia has a few medieval villages scattered along the SP 64. One of them is Dolceacqua, a pleasant town dominated by the Castello dei Doria (14C) and where the excellent local wine, Rossese, is produced. Apricale, 8km to the northeast, is nicknamed "the artists' village" on account of the mural paintings that adorn its historical centre. Finally, 10km further, Pigna is worth the detour for its church, San Michele (15C) and the lovely view it offers of Piazza Castello. A pleasant expedition.
