Set in the forests of the Troodos, Kykkos is the most revered monastery on the island. It was founded in the 12C, burned down numerous times, but always born again. Here you can admire the treasures of the Cypriot Church, an icon of St Luke painting the Virgin Mary and an abundant collection of religious objects, part of which is exhibited in the museum. The monastery stands against the backdrop of Mt Kykkos: the final resting place of the father of Cypriot independence, Mgr Makarios, who was admitted as a novice to Kykkos Monastery.
