The Hautes Fagnes region lies between Eupen and Malmedy. This is a wind-swept plateau, nostalgic and desolate, where peat bogs and fields of flying bent (a smooth herbaceous plant) stretch as far as the eye can see, broken up by clumps of spruce and deciduous trees. This once densely populated area is now almost deserted, but from that time it retains traces of an old causeway, the Via Mansuerisca thought to date back to the 7C.
